The Hannya mask represents a woman transformed by jealousy and rage into a demon, her face twisted with horns, sharp teeth and piercing eyes. In Japanese mythology the Hannya is both feared and pitied, a symbol of torment yet also of deep humanity, carrying the weight of emotion turned to darkness.
