A personal reflection from Strictly on the Ronin collaboration and what it taught us about who we are.

When we first began working with Tu Lam on this series, we knew we were stepping into something far bigger than a creative campaign. The Book of Five Rings has never been a collection of old philosophies or historical lessons, for many of our audience they are a living, breathing code. A map for navigating both inner and outer conflict in life and use as a guide for discipline, adaptability, and honour.

As this collaboration unfolded, we never felt like we were just creating artwork. It always felt like we were holding a mirror up to ourselves, our team, our brand, and the people who wear Strictly with pride. Each painting was a chapter in a much greater story and one that didn't just belong to Tu, or to us, but to anyone who's ever stood between who they are and who they want to become.

Tu's life has been shaped by extremes. From the battlefield to the dojo, he has lived a life defined by clarity, structure, and service. But beneath the surface of his warrior exterior, we found a deeply creative, spiritual person and someone who understands that true strength isn't just about power, but all about presence. That was a message that resonated with us from the very beginning.

At Strictly, our story is told through ink, through sweat and through the stubborn pursuit of creative integrity. We come from a culture where self-expression isn't a luxury, it's survival. Tattoos, streetwear, artwork have never been trends for us but more records of truth.

So, when we discussed the idea of translating the Five Elements into paintings with Tu, it felt like we were being invited into a sacred ritual. But instead of copying tradition, we brought our world into it and attempted to fuse and blend the sacred with the street and the ancient with the modern.

FIRE

" THE SPARK
THAT STARTS IT ALL "

So, the journey began with Fire, the element that burns away illusion and awakens the spirit to action. In the artwork, Ronin emerges from the darkness like a decision already made. There is no hesitation in his posture, no conflict in his movement, just a warrior who has already accepted the cost.

To us, Fire was not about destruction, but about commitment. It captured the moment everyone has faced, that moment when you stop second-guessing and just start building. It reminded us of the early days of Strictly, when all we had was instinct, conviction, and a vision no one else could see. Fire was a call to act, to claim space, and to move forward regardless of the risk.

Water

" STRENGTH IN STILLNESS "

Where Fire was all about rawness and immediate action, Water brought precision and patience. In this chapter, Ronin doesn't draw his weapon. He waits. He watches and his body flows like a current, powerful, and composed.

To us, Water was not about destruction but about commitment. It captured the moment everyone has faced, that moment when you stop second-guessing and just start building. It reminded us of the early days of Strictly, when all we had was instinct, conviction, and a vision—unlike Fire—to earn space, and to move forward regardless of the risk.

Earth

" THE FOUNDATION
WE STAND ON "

With Earth, the series became much heavier and not just visually but also emotionally. This was Ronin as an immovable presence, armoured, grounded, and unshakable. Surrounded by stone, he becomes part of the landscape itself and deeply rooted within it.

For us this painting was about legacy, and it reminded us of our roots, our community, and the responsibility that comes with building something real. Earth was just as much a tribute to every tattoo artist who chooses substance over show, to every piece of art that takes a long time to master, and to every decision we've made to try and stay independent and true to our ethos.

WIND

" ADAPTABILITY
IS SURVIVAL "

Wind shifted the tone again and suddenly there was movement. Action. Urgency. Ronin is caught mid-stride, his weapon raised, his eyes locked. There is no hesitation or overthinking. Just instinct.

Wind reminded us that staying grounded is super important to us and that staying responsive is essential. In our world, things can change fast. One day you're shipping product, the next you're rewriting everything. Wind captured or highlighted the side of Strictly that doesn't flinch when the plan breaks. The part that improvises, adapts, and still delivers.

In this painting, we saw the pressure and clarity of the urban culture. The feeling of needing to do things before anyone else does and the courage to pivot without losing direction. Wind was our gut instinct made visible.

Void

" THE END, OR
THE BEGINNING? "

Then we arrived at Void. This was the fifth and final element and the chapter that closes the book and opens the soul.

In the final artwork, Ronin has returned to Musashi's cave. The journey is over, and his weapons are at rest. There is no action. No movement. Just complete stillness. Darkness surrounds him all but a single light that cuts through to illuminate the book rested in front of. The book is closed, but it's not a full stop. It's a breath. Some space and a choice.

Void represents what lies beyond mastery and even beyond knowing. Beyond ego. It's not empty, it's infinite and it's the place you reach when you've given everything and left needing nothing. It's what remains when all the noise fades and the work stand on its own.

For us, Void is almost like a mirror. We reflected on what we've learned so far, what we've let go of, and what we're ready to create next as a team and family.

Looking back now, each element revealed something much deeper than we expected, not just about our love and respect for samurai culture, but about who we are as creators, as a brand, and as a collective of individuals bound together by shared values. These weren't just chapters in a mythological framework. They became mirrors and each one showed us a truth we probably would have overlooked when we rush through every day.

Fire reminded us that every story starts with a bold decision. It's the spark and the instinct to begin even before you're ready, to believe in something even when there's no blueprint or roadmap. Fire helped keep strictly off the ground and it reminds us to keep reaching for work that feels alive.

Water taught us to embrace patience and precision. It showed us that force isn't always the answer, and that clarity often comes when you stop pushing and merely start flowing in our journey. Water reminded us that some of our strongest moments happen not when we react, but when we choose to wait, to listen, and to move with purpose.

Earth grounded us. It made us look down for a moment and honour the foundation beneath our feet, the community, the culture, the craft. In a time that glorifies speed, Earth demanded presence and it told us to build slowly, honestly, and with weight.

Wind brought movement and pressure and the kind of sharp intuition you need when everything shifts. It reminds us to trust our instincts again and to pivot when needed without losing direction. Wind reignited the confidence to keep evolving without letting go of who we are. And Void, the final element, the one that gave us space. Not just to reflect for a moment, but to let go.

Void wasn't about finishing, it was about cleaning and making room for something new. It reminded us that growth is not always visible and that some of the most important work happens when you are still, in the darkness and in the silence after the story is told.

Together, these five elements formed a full cycle and maybe one that doesn't just exist in ancient texts but lives in every tattoo, every sketch, every late-night decision, and every moment of clarity we've had while building this brand. It mirrors how we create; we start with a vision and idea, trust the process, stay rooted, we adapt when we need to, and eventually, we let the work breathe for itself.

This collaboration gave us a new language, but it also validated the one we've been speaking all along.

Through all five elements there was one thing that never shifted. We stayed Strictly.

That doesn't just mean we kept things the same and did it how we always have, but what it means is we held onto the soul of the brand, the people, the culture, the conviction, the stories told through ink, fabric, and feeling. We didn't try to dilute it to try to fit someone else's mold or explain ourselves during every step of this collaboration. We let the work be the work. And that was a kind of statement we have been proud of.

It's really because of that that something rare happened. This project didn't just feel like a campaign, it felt like a true moment we'll look back on and say: "That was real." The art became a memory, and the collaboration became a legacy. And the people who supported it, all of you who showed up, who shared it, who saw themselves in it, you're not just part of the audience. You're part of the story.

This wasn't just a product drop. It was a chapter in the book of who we are and what we believe.
We might be closing this series now, but the journey isn't over.

The elements live on in every decision we make.

In the next design or needle line that says something without needing to shout.
