THE ONI KING:

SHUTEN DOJI 酒呑童子

By STRICTLY on Dec 03, 2024

The name Shuten Dōji means “Sake-Drinking Boy.”

Once human, he was an abandoned child, cast out for his strange appearance and unnatural strength.

Shunned by society, he grew bitter and gathered outcasts around him, slowly becoming one of Japan’s most feared oni.

His tale is a descent from orphan to monstrous warlord, a reign of terror that haunted ancient Kyoto.

Towering in size, wreathed in a fiery aura, and driven by an endless thirst for sake, he became known as the infamous Drunken Demon.

Hidden in the mountains of Mount Ōe, he ruled a fortress where terror reigned.

Shuten Dōji’s power grew as he turned his followers into demons, unleashing a campaign of abduction and bloodshed that shook the imperial capital.

In desperation, the emperor summoned Minamoto no Yorimitsu, known as Raikō.

Disguised as monks, Raikō and his warriors ascended Mount Ōe, carrying enchanted sake laced with a sleeping potion, ready to face the demon king.
